Under Canadian government rules up to 9.09% of a whisky can consist of another alcoholic beverage. According to Costco, the mash bill for the Kirkland Signature Canadian Whisky is listed as 94% corn, 2% rye, 2% barley and 1% Sherry. In a blind tasting, however, I think it would be very hard to distinguish between the two.Ĭrown Royal consists of a blend of 50 different whiskies of varying ages, each based on one of five different mash bills. That may reflect its longer aging compared to Crown Royal’s entry level expressions. The Kirkland version seems a bit spicier to me. There is no question that the Kirkland Signature Canadian Whisky has a very similar aroma and taste profile to Crown Royal. The finish is medium length, sweet, with a slightly bitter note at the end. On the palate, it is sweet and creamy smooth, with notes of cinnamon, caramel, vanilla, a nutty character, and a hint of mint. On the nose, the Kirkland Signature Blended Canadian Whisky shows distinct aromas of vanilla, caramel, honey, some dried fruit and cinnamon, with a hint of clove and toasted oak. Although it is entirely possible, that if the whisky is made by Crown Royal, it includes a different blend of many of the component whiskies that are used to make the various Crown Royal expressions. There is no Crown Royal expression at present that is a direct substitute for the Kirkland Signature Canadian whisky bottling. What matters is whether you like the taste and whether you think the price represents a good value. In the end, where the whisky is produced doesn’t really matter. That’s more sales than all of the other brands of Canadian whisky combined. In 2019, Crown Royal sold over 6.8 million, 9-liter cases in the US. Or it may simply reflect the fact that Crown Royal is far and away the best-selling Canadian whisky in the US. Costco has usually not disclosed the producers of the Kirkland branded spirits a practice that has given rise to incessant speculation among consumers on the origins of the Kirkland spirit expressions.īear in mind that proprietary spirit brands will often purposely try to mimic the aroma and taste profile of market leaders.
